Our research
strength
You’ll join our triple-accredited Business School, one of the largest and most powerful UK communities of business and management researchers.
The Business School’s mission is to transform lives, businesses and communities through excellent teaching, world-class research, and impactful collaborations with industrial and societal stakeholders.
The Faculty of Business and Law is home to world-leading research in place management, decent work and productivity, and sports policy.
In REF 2021, 100% of our research impact was assessed as world leading or internationally excellent, and we ranked 16th amongst all business and management schools in the UK.
Our research environment was also ranked in the top quartile, with praise given for the way we develop early and mid-career researchers and for our commitment to EDI.
Research
initiatives
We collaborate regionally, nationally, and internationally with private and third-sector organisations and policymakers, attracting funding from UKRI, ESRC, Nuffield, The Leverhulme Trust, NIHR, and partnerships with the UK government and industry.
Specialist areas of focus in the Business School include:
- The Institute of Place Management, where our world-renowned researchers lead the UK government’s £8.6m High Streets Task Force.
- The Decent Work and Productivity Research Centre, which works alongside businesses and policymakers exploring aspects of employability, employment practices, and the future of work.
- The Sylvia Pankhurst Gender and Diversity Research Centre, which explores the causes of inequalities at work to build fairer workplaces.
- The Sports Policy Unit, which analyses the governance, policy, and politics of the sports industry with a focus on mega-events, soft power, and economic growth.
- The Centre for Enterprise, whose multi-award-winning programmes over the last decade have attracted £40m to help almost 2,500 SMEs embrace emerging technologies and boost productivity, creating over 500 new jobs.
